Summer 2008
Summer 2008
In June of 2008,
a good friend of mine from the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs named Shannon Dugan (above) devoted her summer internship to joining me on a seven week trip through East Africa. We reviewed various fistula treatment and psychosocial reintegration models and documenting hospital infrastructure and meeting key personnel at various organizations throughout Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
We traveled over 5,000 miles by public transport staying in local villages around the region. Our visits included government, institutional and faith-based organizations, as well as social businesses and community-based social working groups in all four countries. The summer fact-finding mission provided invaluable insight that has significantly impacted the design of our fistula treatment program model. Read more about it in the blog.
